I am the Earth

Earth Day: April 22nd

Earth Day, which was established in 1970 in the US, is celebrated on 22nd April each year. It is a day to think about our planet and what we can do to keep it special; to think about saving water and energy, reducing pollution, recycling, protecting our animals, trees and plants, and generally getting kids interested in protecting their environment.

Here are some quick ideas for celebrating Earth Day with your children:
  • Plant a tree
  • Go for a bike ride or a long walk (leave the car behind)
  • Hold a nature "scavenger hunt" (send the kids out into the garden or park in teams to collect - or spot - various items on a list you provide)
  • Print out some of our posters and place in strategic positions around the house. Talk about saving water when brushing teeth and saving energy by turning off the lights when you leave a room
  • Bake your favourite cookie or biscuit recipe and let the kids decorate with icing to look like the planet earth
  • Gather family and friends together and combine a picnic or other excursion with a litter clean-up
  • Set up a recycling centre in your home or school
  • Look through your shelves and find some books to give away via your local charity shop or library

The TITANIC: 100 years after (aged 10+)

THE TITANIC: A tragic story

The Titanic was the largest passenger ship in the world when it was built in 1912 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was like a floating town with passengers from all social classes. Third-class passengers paid between 3and 8 pounds for a one-way ticket to America. First class passengers paid 30 pounds. The Titanic’s first voyage was from Southampton in England, to New York City, USA. The ship left on 10 April 1912 but never arrived at her destination.

On April 14th, four days after leaving England, the Titanic was in the North Atlantic. The sea was calm but visibility was low. At 11.40pm, a lookout saw a large iceberg near the ship. 37 seconds later, the Titanic hit the iceberg and water entered the ship. At first the passengers didn’t panic…two hours and 40 minutes later, at 2.20am, the Titanic sank. Of the 2.224 people on board, only 710 survived: there were no enough lifeboats. Most survivors were women, children and the rich: 60% of first-class passengers survived. But only 42% of second-class and less than 25% of third-class passengers survived. The last survivor of the Titanic died in 2009 aged 96. Her name was Millvina Dean and she was two months old when she was rescued from the ship.

100 years after the Titanic tragedy, the world’d most famous ship still fascinates us. The wreck of the Titanic was found in 1985 about 4 km under the sea. James Cameron made his 1997 film, Titanic, using real images of the wreck. It was the highest-grossing film of the all time until Avatar (2009).

Visitors can learn about the Titanic at the new visitor centre n Belfast, Northern Ireland. It’s a giant museum with four wings the shape o Titanic’s hull and it’s built on the site where the Titanic first  entered the water.
