· NEW YEAR: JANUARY 1ST
The New Year’s Parade takes place in London on New Year’s Day. More than 10,000 performers take part. There are marching bands, cheerleaders, historic vehicles, animals, clowns and giants balloons. Thousands of people watch the parade, and some collect donations for charity. It’s a fun way to start the new year!
· JANUARY 3rd: REMEMBERING J.R.R. TOLKIEN
J.R.R. Tolkien was born 120 years ago. His books are well-known worldwide. The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are some of the bestselling books in History. Generations of new fans continue discovering the hobbits’ adventures and Peter Jackson´s new film The Hobbit will be out in December 2012.
· BURNS NIGHT
Scottish people celebrate Burns Night on 25 January. It is the birthday of the Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759- 1796). People eat haggis and say a poem. There is also dancing, singing and people wear tartan.
· FILM OF THE MONTH: FOOTLOOSE
This American film tells the story of what happened to a teenager, Ren McCormack when he moves to a small town in southern USA. The church Minister has banned dancing and rock music. Ren’s arrival causes problems: first, he falls in love with the minister’s daughter, Ariel. Then he decides to organize a senior prom. Can the minister stop the teenagers from having so much fun?
Don’t miss this film which has catchy music and great dancing.
